Xie Xie to Ms Zhao, our Mandarin teacher, for organising a visit from the Beijing Opera as part of China Week !
The event yesterday was mainly aimed at our S2 pupils – who will soon be making their choices as to which languages to continue and/or begin in S3 – but was also attended by some of our Senior Phase classes and some S1 pupils.
All S2 pupils found out about how to use a Chinese abacus (based on multiples of 5, not 10) and heard our visiting musicians perform on a variety of traditional Chinese instruments (One of two ladies played twenty-three instruments). Our pupils had a go, as well, as you can see from the pictures.
This year (2018-19) we have one class of S3 pupils learning Mandarin. We hope to increase this to two classes next year. Hopefully this will have inspired some pupils that Mandarin will be the right language choice for them next year !
Any of our S2 pupils who would like more info about learning mandarin in S3 should see Mrs Zhao.
Parents can also get in touch with me directly if I can help in any way : J.Poots@mgfl.net
