Covid-19: What are we doing about ‘SQA’ for our students?

Friday 20th March 2020

As a priority our staff are reviewing the evidence that students have generated across the academic session to derive accurate ‘estimate grades’.  We always do this but this ‘estimate’ is now crucial in a system without final examinations.

In line with SQA guidance, we are looking at a broad range of evidence, not just prelim results, to make valid, reliable and robust judgements about candidates’ progress. For example, we are looking at classwork, unit tests and practice papers to collate a ‘body’ of evidence that can be used to provide an ‘estimate’ grade.

We are aware that students sometimes perform poorly in prelims, in comparison with final exams, and we will also use our professional judgement, alongside prior attainment to strengthen and inform our assessment of evidence.

Over the course of the next few weeks, in light of this, we will be inviting targeted students in to school at specific times to work with staff to add to this body of evidence. It is important to note that we will ‘target’ students as this action is not appropriate, or necessary, for all students.

You will be informed of these arrangements via Google Classroom (students) or our school website (students, parents/carers) from Tuesday 24th March 2020 onwards, allowing us to collate and best manage the requirements for staff and students alike.

Please note: NO pupils should attend school on Monday 23rd March with the exception of Music Technology students who will receive further communication on this matter.

Please do not send your child into school to study, socialise or ‘drop in’ to speak with staff. We are being guided by Scottish Government’s Health Advice and have a duty of care to staff and students alike to maintain public health under these circumstances.

Our processes are informed by guidance supplied by the SQA and the Scottish Government and will be rigorous and carefully managed to ensure that we are not disadvantaging any students at this unprecedented time.

As you will be aware, this is a challenging time for all of us and we appreciate your patience. We are fully committed to ensuring we do the very best for all of our students and we are aiming to conclude this ‘estimate’ process for each student by Thursday 2nd of April.

However, we must caution that the above may be subject to change, as more clarity and detail emerge from both the SQA and the Scottish Government.
