Celebrating Chinese New Year

The Nanjing Little Red Flower Art Troupe’s s Amazing Performance

To celebrate the Chinese New Year (the Year of the Dog), the Little Red Flower Art Troupe form Nanjing, China have been touring the UK. Their last performance in Scotland was held at Lasswade High School [Midlothian’s Confucius Hub] on Tuesday February 27th. The group of young people [aged 7 – 12} gave a magical performance of traditional and modern Chinese dance and music, playing traditional Chinese instruments.  The troupe comes from one of China’s first children’s art institutions to combine formal education with artistic performance. They have won various awards at national and local children’s dance and music competitions, and toured over 20 countries and regions in Asia, Europe, America and Africa.

Over 300 people attended the performance including the Consul General of the Chinese Consulate in Edinburgh Mr. Xinchun Pan; Midlothian Director of Education Dr. Mary Smith; Director Ms. Fhiona Mackay, depute-director Ms. Fan Lin and Chinese director Ms. Li Tian of Confucius Institute for Scotland’s Schools; invited guests from SCEN and RZSS and pupils from eight different schools. Before the performance Consul General Pan presented a plaque to Depute Headteacher Mr. Colin Mitchell, the award for Midlothian’s Confucius classroom’s nomination as Confucius Classroom of the Year.

The performance at Lasswade brought to an end the celebration of New Year which saw pupils attend the Chinese Lanterns at Edinburgh Zoo, two celebration concerts at the Usher Hall, while in school celebrations included some students making traditional Chinese dumplings.

Lasswade’s Lip Sync Battle 2019

On Wednesday 3rd April at 7pm, staff and students will compete in Lasswade High School’s Lip Sync Battle. The event is proving very popular and all of the money raised will be donated to charity.
