BGE Science

Students will study six areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics throughout the BGE using a variety of learning activities including practical experiments, co-operative learning tasks, discussion and debates, reading for information and presenting findings.

Biology:         Body Organs, Plants, Environments, Cells, Inheritance and Reproduction

Chemistry:     Matter, Acids, Nature’s Resources, Atoms, Chemical reactions and Rocks

Physics:         Waves, Forces, Space, Heat, Electricity and Renewable Energies.

Skills

Students will develop a number of skills throughout the BGE  in the different content areas:

  • Identify a number of key questions and formulate hypotheses and predictions based on information, observations and knowledge
  • Anticipate and apply safety measures to control all risks and hazards
  • Express informed views, both orally and in writing. Present a reasoned argument based on evidence, demonstrating understanding of underlying scientific concepts
  • Demonstrate increased awareness of creativity and inventiveness in science, the use of technologies in the development of sciences, and the impact of science on society.
  • Interpret and analyse the data and information and establish relationships between variables and link to the original hypothesis
  • Increasingly take initiative in decision making about samples, measurements, equipment and procedures to use.
  • Express informed views, both orally and in writing. Present a reasoned argument based on evidence, demonstrating understanding of underlying scientific concepts
  • Communicate effectively in a range of ways
  • Develop skills and attributes of scientifically literate citizens

In S3 students have the opportunity to opt into discrete Science courses.  All students must undertake a Science and it is recommended that students opt into no more than two Sciences.
