Response to feedback submitted from HT Update week ending 31/10/25. There was one other issue raised in relation to our Time Back consequence. The detail of that was too confidential to share and I have spoken with the parent and the relevant member of staff in Student Support.
| My Question | Comment | Suggestion related to the school this week is: | HT’s Response |
| Has the uniform policy been relaxed at school recently? Pupils are now wearing expensive branded full tracksuits to school and there’s barely any “school badged” uniform on show. This results in those trying to conform to school policy as the minority and seems grossly unfair. | No we haven’t changed our position. We aim to comply with National and Midlothian Guidance. We are essentially combinations of black and white, with a school ‘identifier’. This is either the school tie or an item with the school badge. Senior staff are still at the front door each morning to monitor. |
| I’ve seen the news about the gym at the school closing and I’m really worried about how long it’ll be closed for and what that means for the kids who need it for P.E lessons. I have lots of questions about it.
When did the council agree the dates for the gym closure and when did you find out about it? |
Thank you for your questions. I’ll answer them in turn
I’m not sure when it was agreed by the council we were not consulted on the timing or involved in the decision-making. We found out on Tuesday 21st October 2025. This gave us 9 work days to discuss and agree mitigations. No we were not asked, just informed of the dates. The building is a shared space so both the school and community have access. The challenge for the school is the growing roll and the success and popularity of our PE team. There is a huge pressure on space during the school day. I think there is inconsistency across Midlothian schools on access to shared spaces and will work with others to address this. We’ve been offered three spaces. Within the school. One of which, while not ideal, we could make work. This was withdrawn and that’s when I alerted our Parent Council. There was some early discussion around a container in the back playground. Given our experience of the time it takes to get these installed I was not confident it was a realistic option. Over 300 students access the Tone Zone during the school week. 74 are working towards nationally recognised qualifications. |
| Considering the school’s very strong track record for sporting excellence, what is the solution you’re hoping for from the council to the tonezone closure and what’s the school’s view of community use vs school use during this period? | We asked for a postponement and the work taking place between May and August. We were told no.
The school and Sport & Leisure need access to the facilities across the building. As stated above, the challenge for the school is our increasing roll and the success, and popularity of our PE Team. They offer a lot of courses and some of those courses rely on Tone Zone space. The school’s flexibility to move classes is limited because we can only teach classes during the school day. |
| Wanted to check why there was no mention of the ToneZone closure in this week’s update, or earlier? Keen to understand the implications for PE classes and pupils, like my son who pay to use it everyday after school. | Discussions were on-going and I had nothing definitive to say via the HT Update. I reported my concerns to the Parent Council and they began action.
The implications for PE classes is that over 300 students are PE outside during this period. For 74 students their attainment is at risk. Those students who use the Tone Zone after school will need to pick things up with Sport & Leisure I’m afraid. It appears the facility is closed to members. |
