Laboratory Science

Why study Laboratory Science?

Studying Laboratory Science at National 5 will develop the basic practical skills and knowledge needed for working in a laboratory: measuring, weighing and preparing compounds and solutions; and health and safety requirements. Practical skills in microbiology, measuring radioactivity, chemical handling and laboratory instrumentation are developed. In addition to this, Laboratory Science is a skills for work course so students will develop the skills required for the world of work such as communication, collaboration, and problem solving.

By studying Laboratory Science you will:

  • Develop an interest in and understanding of laboratory work, whilst developing skills for work.
  • Engage in a wide range of investigative tasks and develop critical thinking skills to become creative, inventive and enterprising.
  • Have the opportunities to work with companies in the local area both in and out of school.
  • Review your own employability skills, and will seek feedback from others on your strengths and weaknesses.
