Rights Respecting Schools

The rights of the child are an important part of our work in Lasswade. This reflects the national agenda and the commitment to the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Child, UNCRC.

At Lasswade, our work in this area is student led and supported by staff. Our student/staff steering group meet regularly to work towards becoming a school where UNCRC principles underpin our school culture and working practices.

The associated Rights Respecting School Award aims to make young people feel healthier and happier, safe, have strong relationships and become active and involved in school life and the wider world.

The Rights Respecting Schools Award puts young people’s rights at the heart of schools across the UK. Our school achieved the Bronze Award in March 2021 and the Silver Award in May 2022 2022.  We are now working towards Gold Award status with a target date of the second half of session 2023/24.

Our students and staff group work across the school community to ensure everyone has an understanding of the UNCRC and how this can have an impact on our everyday lives. We also work to develop and maintain a school community based on equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation. This includes learning and teaching in a way that respects the rights of both learners and teachers and promotes well-being. This also includes empowering everyone to enjoy and exercise their rights and to promote the rights of others locally and globally.
