Return to School 4: Dress Code

Saturday 14th August 2021

As we prepare for the return of our students on Wednesday 18th August this post shares Dress Code expectations with parents/carers.  We ask that parents/carers of our new S1 students share this information with their children.  For all other year groups messages will be posted in Year Group Google Classrooms (please note these have been renamed to reflect new year groups, S2 becoming S3 etc).

Our Return to School 1 post, covered Covid-19 related mitigations and arrangements that will be in place from the start of term.  Return to School 2 covered First Day Arrangements.  Return to School 3 addressed Senior Phase Re-coursing.  This post covers student Dress Code expectations.

Dress Code Expectations

Last session we relaxed our Dress Code expectations to reflect Covid-19 guidance and our own operational school context.  The biggest issue was/is non-availability of our school changing room facilities.  This means we asked students to wear their PE kit to school on days they had PE.  We had no capacity to check that students in PE kit always were timetabled for PE that day.  All this meant a steady decline in our school uniform compliance which we know concerned many parents/carers and staff.

As you will be aware from our Back to School 1 website post our Covid-19 mitigations remain pretty much as was.  This means we still have no access to PE changing rooms and when students have PE they will be expected to come to school in their PE kit.   On all other days we expect students to be wearing their school uniform.

The exception to the above is School of Football and School of Rugby students.   These students should be in full school uniform each day and bring their kit.  These students will have access to the Swimming Pool changing area.

The significant difference this school session is that we have more capacity to check that all students are maximising their time in school uniform.  We will regularly spot check students in classes to confirm that, if students are wearing PE kit, they have PE that day.

In addition, the Scottish Government guidance we apply will be reviewed before the end of September.  We expect fewer restrictions which may allow us to re-use changing facilities.
