SQA Update- 11th May

Tuesday 11th May 2021

Firstly, we’d like to say well done to all of our Senior students for their work so far this term. We appreciate that this is a challenging time, but on behalf of all the staff, we’d like to thank our students for their positive approach.

As the assessments to support N5, Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications continue, we would like to provide an update about how we are working to support our students at this time.

As you know, Provisional Results for this year are based on ‘demonstrated attainment’ which is work that students complete. Each subject has shared information which explains which evidence is being used to support Provisional Results. SQA Guidance. According to SQA guidelines, it’s important that results are based on the best evidence- which in most cases is formal assessment evidence. However, please be assured that where there is other appropriate evidence, it will be considered as part of our processes.

We know that the lockdown earlier this year has made this more challenging. However, we have a number of supports in place to help. Our assessments have been broken up and take place in class time. The aim is to help students manage revision gradually and maximise learning time with teachers.

We are also being flexible with the timing of assessments. We have rescheduled assessments to support students observing Ramadan, to help students who have missed school through self-isolation or other absence. Please speak speak to your child’s Student Support teacher if your feel that your child requires any further help with this.

There are a number of other supports in place to help. Our SQA Tutoring programme is available to all students to help consolidate learning. We have adapted core classes in P.S.E. and R.M.P.S. so that you have study time and access to Study Toolkits to help you prepare. Please find more information about how the SQA are supporting the disruption to your learning available on the SQA website here. And finally, please also remember that our Mental Health website has plenty of useful advice.

Part of our flexible approach means that assessments are taking place at different times, not just in our school, but across Midlothian and Scotland. Assessments have been adapted and changed to fit each school. However, it is important that students follow both SQA advice, and demonstrate our school value of respect, and do not discuss assessments with other students or on social media.

If you have any questions about SQA, please feel free to get in contact at our dedicated e-mail address LasswadeHS-SQA@mgfl.net
