S3 Modern Languages: Mandarin
Modern Languages in S3 is optional with students having the option of selecting a combination of courses in French, German (from session 2019/2020) and Mandarin.
S3 Mandarin aims to build on six week taster course offered to students in S2. The S3 course develops student’s Mandarin language skills and understanding of the culture of China.
By the end of S3 students will have covered enough language and culture in Mandarin to be ready to start preparing for success at National 5 at the end of S4. Homework and assessments are a regular feature of the course.
Mandarin students can expect an intensive pace of learning is Fortunately, because students have been studying a foreign language (French) in S1 and S2 they are able to apply the language learning skills acquired in French to Mandarin studies and make rapid progress.
As our school is the Midlothian Hub and Mandarin learning at Lasswade is supported by the Confucius Institute students can expect many opportunities to experience Chinese culture first-hand both in Scotland and, increasingly, in China itself as our links with this fascinating country are developing each session.
