Coronavirus/Covid-19 Update

Friday 13th March 2020

Our response to Coronavirus/Covid-19 has stepped up significantly from the beginning of last week. This is a result of expectations placed upon us by Scottish Government.  All our actions are a result of implementing guidance developed by experts on these matters. We have created a ‘Coronavirus Core Team’, who meet daily, to review, disseminate and act upon new information released by the Scottish Government, NHS Lothian and Midlothian Council.

Our focus has been on the following four areas

  1. Logistics relating to good health and hygiene in and around the school campus
  2. School trips and our international partnerships
  3. Student welfare and planning to support continuity in learning if/when the impact of the virus progress;  this includes work relating to the upcoming SQA Diet
  4. Communication with all stakeholders as appropriate

In terms of item 1 above, please be aware of the Scottish and UK Government announcements last night in relation to new advice on self-isolating.  Students or staff with symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 – in particular a fever/temperature or a new continuous cough – should stay at home for seven days.  Staff or student absences should be reported in the normal way.  Please also note that those who have been in contact with someone who is experiencing symptoms should only stay at home if they begin to experience symptoms.

In terms of item 3 above,  some of our most relevant action, as we plan for a potential disruption to our ‘normal service’, is as follows

As you will be aware the situation is under constant review and has the potential to change quickly.  I hope you also agree our job as adults, parents/carers and school staff,  is to support each other, and our children/students, in calm manner that relies on facts and up-to-date guidance, challenging hyperbole and ‘fake news’ when necessary.

To this end our aim is to share information and updates for parents/carers on our website on a daily basis.  We will reinforce key messages and significant changes to our ‘normal service’ via GroupCall texts that may direct parent/carers to this website
