SQA Update 03/04/20

Friday 3rd April 2020

Yesterday evening the SQA released their latest statement regarding the 2020 certification process. This statement provided guidance in three key areas:

A link to this statement can be found here.

The SQA have now confirmed that students’ estimate grades, for National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher, will be the basis for certification this year. As a school, we are well underway with our  review of student evidence. Currently, our subject teams are working collaboratively to moderate evidence, and to ensure a robust and consistent approach to deriving estimate grades in each course. We are also looking closely at how we can use professional judgement, and our knowledge of prior attainment, to ensure that students are rightly and fairly credited for their hard work this session, with no student disadvantaged as a result of this alternative certification model.

Further guidance for schools, on how to determine and submit our estimate grades, has been scheduled for release by 20th April. Following this, we will begin to finalise our data through a quality improvement process, to verify that our estimate grades are in line with the projected attainment for our students at an individual level, as well as across our courses and cohorts at large.

What is important to emphasise is that the school, as always,  advises the SQA on the estimated grade for each student,  the SQA will then determine the grade awarded. The SQA have stated that, for this year, their ‘post-results service’ will be free of charge. This means that any student who believes that their final grade is inaccurate or unfair can appeal their result though this process.

The SQA have also published, as part of yesterday’s statement,  a FAQs document for learners, parents and carers – this is provided  for you at the bottom of this post. As recommended in this document, we would advise that students sign up for MySQA to receive their final results, as scheduled, on the 4th August.
