Dress Down Day: Friday 22nd March

On Friday 22nd March, there will be a dress down day in support of British Red Cross.

The British Red Cross are currently providing life saving help for Palestinian and Israeli civilians who have been impacted by the ongoing crisis in the region.

There will also be a bake sale with proceeds going to the British Red Cross.

If you would like to know more about how the British Red Cross are providing aid please follow this link https://donate.redcross.org.uk/appeal/israel-and-occupied-palestinian-territory-appeal.

The S6 Charities Committee will be at the front doors and playground doors with buckets to collect donations. ParentPay is also open and available, if families would like to donate online. It is not necessary to contribute towards any dress down day.

This will be our final dress down day before the Easter holidays.

S1 Parents’ Evening 2024: Parent/Carer Feedback

Thank you to all parents/carers who booked and attended online appointments for our S1 Parents’ Evening on Thursday 29th February. We hope you all had a very positive experience and look forward to communicating with you again in the near future.

We recognise that Parents’ Evening appointments are in high demand and that it is very challenging to suit every circumstance. However, we value parent/carer feedback and use it to evaluate your experiences and implement change. We would appreciate it if you could complete this short Google Form by Friday 15th March.

S1 Parents’ Evening 2024

On Thursday 29th February 2024 between 4.30pm and 7pm, the online S1 Parents’ Evening will be taking place. The system that we use for S1-S6 Parents’ Evenings is called ‘ParentBooking.com’ (see website https://www.parents-booking.co.uk/lasswade).

Dates for your diary – the booking system opens at 7pm on Sunday 18th February and will close at 10am on Monday 27th February.

You will not be able to log in to your account before this time.

We are continuing to trial opening the booking system in the evening to improve our service for parents/carers who have found accessing the booking system during normal working hours challenging.  As a result, please be aware that our admin staff will not be able to respond to any issues, or respond to any communications until Monday morning.

All of our Parents’ Evenings are now fully online (video call), so if you have not taken part in an online Parents’ Evening at Lasswade HS before, please read the Parent/Carer User Guide ahead of the evening or watch this useful video Video Meetings Demo, with Troubleshooting.

Each student can book a maximum of 10 appointments. Each appointment lasts for 4 minutes (on screen timer) with a minute in between consecutive appointments.

If more than one parent/carer wishes to join the video call, the identified ‘main carer’ (person who makes the appointments) must be the person to share the joining details with the other parent/carer.

Dress Down Day 24/11/23

As we draw closer to Christmas, we will be shortly launching our two main charitable appeals; the Mission Christmas toy appeal and the Lasswade Christmas Food Hampers. Both of these appeals were extremely successful last year and very well-received by the community.

This ‘Dress Down’ Friday (24/11/23), instead of students and families solely donating money to our chosen charities, we are kindly asking students and families, if at all possible, to donate long-life foods, which will all go towards our Lasswade Christmas Food Hampers appeal. We will still very grateful take cash/Parent Pay donations which will go towards our chosen charities.

Please see below a list of long-life foods and non-food items, which will all go a long way to supporting families in need. The S6 Charities Committee will be collecting donations at the front entrance and playground doors from 8am on Friday morning.

S2 into S3 Course Choice

We are excited to announce our S2 into S3 course choice evening will take place virtually, via Zoom on Monday the 27th of November from 6pm to 7pm. Parents/carers and students will be guided through the course choice process which will start when we return from the Christmas break.

The link to the session will be emailed to all parents and carers on Friday the 24th of November. If you do not receive an email please contact lasswade_hs@midlothian.gov.uk for support.

Based on our feedback and attendance from last year we have again opted for an online meeting.  If you are unable to attend, a video guide and the FAQs raised during the meeting will be posted on our school website. You and your child/(ren) can access these at any time following the meeting.

Creative Industries Showcase 2023

Our Creative Industries Showcase is taking place on Thursday 16th November 6pm – 8pm. We look forward to welcoming our students and their families into the building to celebrate the achievements of our creative and talented students.

Please click on the link below to complete the short Google Form survey to let us know if students and families intend on attending the exhibition.

Creative Industries Showcase 2023 RSVP

It is essential that this survey is completed by Friday 10th November so that we can check final numbers for the planning of the evening.

The event will include an Art, Photography and Design exhibition, as well as a shop where you can purchase products made by our students. This year we will also have a dance performance and fashion show, which will begin at 6.45pm followed by awards.

We look forward to celebrating the amazing achievements of our students with you!

S2 Parents’ Evening 2023: Parent/Carer Feedback

Thank you to all parents/carers who booked and attended virtual appointments for our S2 Parents’ Evening (Tuesday 10th October). We hope you all had a very positive experience and look forward to communicating with you again in the near future:

  • S2 Alert Report – Thursday 18th January 2024
  • S2 Full Report – Thursday 9th May 2024

Over the past year, we have made some recent changes to our S1 and S2 Parents’ Evenings:

  • Increased the number of available teacher appointments from 22 to 27 (an additional 5 appointments per member of staff), meaning staff can meet with more families, which is helpful given that many members of staff have multiple S2 classes.
  • Appointment times were reduced from 5 minutes to 4 minutes to allow families and staff time to prepare for their next appointment and/or step away from the screen briefly.
  • Timers were added to screens to help staff and families manage their appointments efficiently and prevent overrunning/missing appointments.

Given that there are 300 students in the S2 cohort, we recognise that it is very challenging to suit every circumstance. However, we value parent/carer feedback and use it to evaluate your experiences and implement change. We would appreciate it if you could complete this short S2 Parents’ Evening 2023: Parent/Carer Feedback Google Form by Monday 6th November.

S2 Parents’ Evening 2023

Our staff are looking forward to meeting with S2 parents/carers for the S2 Parents’ Evening on Tuesday 10th October  between 4.30pm and 7pm.

The booking system has been open for one week and closed at 3.30pm yesterday (02/10/23). Please ensure that you are aware of all your booked appointments. We recommend that families enter their appointments into personal/family calendars to avoid missing out.

All of our Parents’ Evenings are now fully online (video call), so please read the Parent/Carer User Guide ahead of the evening or watch this useful video Video Meetings Demo, with Troubleshooting.

Please also check all of your system requirements ahead of time, including that your speakers and microphone work effectively.

If you can no longer attend the Parents’ Evening or a specific appointment, please cancel it online as this will free up appointments for other students and families.

P7 Open Evening 2023

On Tuesday 24th October 6pm-7.30pm, we will be hosting our annual P7 Open Evening. The event will be held in the school building and we look forward to meeting as many families as possible.

Aims
The P7 Open Evening aims to support P7 students and families in a number of ways:

  • Become familiar with the school building
  • Meet staff and students
  • Find out about P7/S1 Transition at Lasswade
  • Engage in various fun subject-specific workshops
  • Ask and answer questions

Format
We understand that families are extremely busy and have many commitments, therefore we are making the evening as flexible as possible. At 6pm, there will be a 15-minute presentation (presentation 1) in the Assembly Hall from the Head Teacher and the P7/S1 Transition Team. This presentation will be repeated again at 6.45pm (presentation 2). Once we reach capacity in the Assembly Hall for presentation 1, families will be asked to join presentation 2 at 6.45pm.

This means that families will have the remainder of the evening to explore the school and visit workshops. Staff will lead all of our workshops and you will have the chance to get involved in experiments, games and activities as well as ask subject-specific questions.

We suggest that you arrive at Lasswade High School for 5.45pm/5.50pm as this is one of the busiest events in our school calendar. There will be refreshments and music for you to enjoy in the Atrium. Staff and Senior Students will be on hand to guide you around the school and you will receive a programme on your arrival.

RSVP
In order to make the evening as comfortable as possible, we are asking that all families complete our brief RSVP. Link to RSVP: https://forms.gle/ULw55pKvjdw1eU4Q7

Out of Catchment
If you live outside of our school catchment area, there is no guarantee of securing a place in S1, even if your child currently attends one of our associated primary schools. You are more than welcome to attend our P7 Open Evening to get a better feel for our school, should you decide to pursue a placing request (via Midlothian Council).

Communication
Please follow us on Twitter and Instagram as well as our Parent Council Facebook page and school website for news and updates.
