HT Update: Week Ending 4th November 2022

Friday 4th November 2022

This concise weekly HT Update will be published every Friday afternoon with a simple opportunity for you to also feedback/ask questions via the link at the bottom of each Update.  Feedback received, where appropriate, will be responded to and published on Monday afternoons on the school website link.

Key messages from this week

Calendar: Next week’s key events include;  Remembrance Assemblies for all year groups held throughout the week culminating in the S6 Assembly held on Friday 11th November.  On Tuesday our Higher Dance students will attend a Commercial Workshop at Dalkeith HS and on Thursday there will be a Tennis Trip to Emirates Stadium, Glasgow.

Study Skills Workshop: We are offering study skills workshops aimed at S4 students on November 21st, 22nd, 23rd from 3.30-4.30 in Rooms 114/115. These will highlight a variety of revision techniques which should be applicable to multiple subjects. There will be a Google sign up form posted on the S4 Year Group Google Classroom next week. If S4 students would like any more information on these, please ask them to get in touch with Miss Atkinson in Social Studies.  Please also note that there will be an on-line session aimed at all Senior Phase parents/carers beginning at 7.00pm on Tuesday 22nd November.  All Senior Phase parents/carers will be emailed the Zoom code prior to the event.  A similar session for parents/carers of BGEd students will be held after Christmas.

Facilities:  There have also been some temporary roof repairs taking place this week so we hope to have fewer leaks over the course of the winter months.  Work is on-going.

Fuel Change:  Our thanks to Miss Chalmers and our SCQF Ambassadors who were able to attend the Fuel Change Conference this week at Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh.  Miss Chalmers has agreed to lead on this work from a staff perspective and work with students to help develop our sustainability thinking across the school.

School Podcast:  Our ‘Lasswade Life’ podcast series, hosted by 2 of our senior students, will launch next week.  This series looks at how we work as a school to seek improvement and is organised into short 10 minute episodes.  We’ll share details with you next week.

Review of Qualifications and Assessment:  As indicated last week phase 2 of an independent review of Senior Phase Qualifications and Assessment has recently opened with a closing date of Friday 16th December 2022.  This consultation is part of wider education reforms being undertaken and should in the fullness of time result in potentially significant changes around how students secure qualifications in school.  Our parent/carer consultation event will be held on-line on Wednesday 30th November at 7.00pm.   All parents/carers will be emailed the Zoom code prior to the event as it is likely that any reform agreed will impact most on BGEd students. Our event will be designed to inform parents but also to gather their views to inform our school response.   Individuals are also able to respond.  Details are available via the following link click here

LGBT Silver Charter: We are working towards gaining our LGBT Silver Charter Award,  hopefully later this session.   As part of the process staff training with an external provider will take place this month.
