Friday 12th March 2021
With more Senior Phase students returning to school from the 15th March, we are now able to progress our plans to support Alternative Certification of N5, Higher and Advanced Higher courses.
With the cancellation of external exams, all qualifications will be awarded based on ‘demonstrated attainment’. This means evidence that is completed by students under appropriate assessment conditions.
In line with both local and national guidance we have developed a set of Key Principles to support our approaches to Formal Assessment which can be found in our LHS SQA Alternative Certification PARENT & CARER Guide 2020-21
Formal Assessments will be undertaken in class time to prioritise time for learning and teaching. We are using an approach where assessments are ‘broken up’ and ‘spaced out’ so that students can better manage their revision and progress towards their qualifications gradually.
During the phased return of Senior Phase students prior to Easter, the focus will be on learning and teaching and supporting our students with a return to the school environment.
Almost all Formal Assessment opportunities to support Provisional Results will take place post Easter. We are working in collaboration with our colleagues across Midlothian and a full schedule of these assessments is in development and will be shared with students, parents and carers prior to Easter.
There are a few Formal Assessments which will take place prior to Easter- mainly in practical subjects which require specific resources. A couple of subjects are also providing students with an opportunity for timed assessment practice and feedback. Whilst many students are keen to undertake this practice, we appreciate that others may not and teachers have been advised to speak with students on their return and make flexible arrangements as required.
Students will receive two weeks’ notice of any Formal Assessment to support Provisional Results through their Subject Google Classrooms. Please find a summary of assessment taking place prior to Easter below.
We are aware that there have been many challenges and uncertainties this year. But we believe that this return to school allows us to move forwards with our plans to support fair and appropriate certification for all of our young people. To support students, parents and carers in their understanding of these processes, the SQA has also produced a booklet called ‘What you need to know for 2021’ which is available on the SQA website here.
We will be holding another SQA Information Evening on Wednesday 31st March. Further information and booking details to follow soon. Please remember that you can also get in touch using our dedicated e-mail address LasswadeHS-SQA@mgfl.netTweet  Share on Facebook
