Humanities encompasses aspects of Social Studies and Religious and Moral Education. Within Social Studies students develop their understanding of the world by learning about other people and their values, in different places, times and circumstances. Students also develop their understanding of the environment and of how it has been shaped. Learning in this curricular area maintains a focus on the historical, social, geographic, economic and political within a local national and international context.
Students learn about human achievement and about how to make sense of changes in society, of conflicts and of environmental issues. It allows students to make informed decisions and act as responsible citizens.
Religious and Moral Education enables students to explore the world’s major religions and views which are independent of religious beliefs. It allows consideration of the challenges posed by these beliefs and values.
Learning in this curricular area allows students to develop and reflect upon their own values and their capacity for moral judgement. It allows an awareness and appreciation of the value of each individual in a diverse society and engenders responsible attitudes towards others. This awareness and appreciation allows us to challenge prejudice and intolerance.
This team works closely with our ‘Citizenship & Society’ team. Both teams share staff and have collaborative leadership models.
